Connectivity over remote and rural parts of Scotland with Firstcom – Case Study

The Scottish Salmon Company is a salmon farming business headquartered in Edinburgh. It breeds, farms and processes its salmon in the Western Highlands and Islands and sells around 25,000 tonnes of premium Scottish salmon a year to over 25 countries around the world. It has investments of over 10m in the local economy and indirectly supports over 1,200 Scottish jobs.

The Scottish Salmon Company has 500 or so staff spread across 60 freshwater, marine and processing facilities in some of the remotest and most rural parts of Scotland. So good connectivity across a large area and hostile environments is key to The Scottish Salmon Company’s operational efficiency.

The Scottish Salmon Company has been a client with Difference, now Firstcom, since 2011.

From calls, lines, mobile phones and conferencing, it quickly also became an early adopter of Firstcom’s satellite broadband and broadband boosters through the Super Connected scheme. For many businesses the only route to ultrafast broadband is through a leased line which, with expensive installation fees and monthly rates often starting from several hundred pounds a month, can be expensive. The Super Connected programme aims to overcome this barrier by making ultrafast broadband far more accessible; providing funding for eligible businesses to connect to a much faster service.

Firstcom prides itself on its decade-long relationship with The Scottish Salmon Company. Its solutions have enabled The Scottish Salmon Company to stay connected with its staff, customers and prospects, to grow its business and to maximise operational efficiency.

As a supplier of Super Connected, Firstcom has helped The Scottish Salmon Company do what it did before but faster and more reliably, enabling it to explore exciting new ways of doing business. Its broadband solutions have ensured that The Scottish Salmon Company has stayed connected across the most rural and remote parts of Scotland.
