For decades, the copper network has underpinned UK business communications. It has been fairly reliable, cheap, easy to deploy and use, and widely adopted via a vast range of products. Lots of options meant we all squeezed more out of these legacy circuits.
But the market has changed—and in 2026, the economics of standing still no longer make sense.
Over the past year, we’ve worked closely with organisations of all sizes to help them transition away from legacy infrastructure. In parallel, we’ve been engaging directly with BT Openreach to understand not just what is happening next, but why—and how forward‑thinking businesses should respond.
The reality of WLR: Rising costs
BT Openreach will fully retire Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) copper PSTN and ISDN phone line services in January 2027 including all copper based broadband services.
In advance of this, Openreach is applying a series of significant price increases throughout 2026 to accelerate migration away from copper-based services.
These increases are industry‑wide. They are not driven by individual providers, and every supplier will be required to pass them on from BT Openreach.
The timeline is clear:
- April 2026: Legacy PSTN/ ADSL and Ethernet services will be increased by 20%
- July 2026: A further 40% increase on these services.
- October 2026: An additional 40% increase; meaning PSTN and other associated product rentals will be double today’s cost.
The message is clear, “copper-based services are approaching end‑of‑life and continuing to rely on it will mean paying more for infrastructure that delivers less reliability, flexibility, and resilience. It will also not be delayed, sorry if you are hoping it is another false end date!
What the copper switch-off really means to you
When the copper network is switched off, services that depend on it will not degrade gradually—they will stop.
For many of you, telephony still underpins your business, customer experience, payments, safety systems, and compliance. Delaying migration introduces an avoidable risk: disconnected numbers, service downtime, and rushed decisions under pressure.
You may already be seeing that ageing copper-based services are increasingly vulnerable to weather, roadworks, and physical degradation. It was never designed to support cloud-first working, real-time collaboration, or data‑driven operations. The engineers who support these products at BT Openreach are re-training on fibre-based services. It’s only going to get worse.
Get your replacement orders going right now
You are not swapping aging services for new ones; you are digitally transforming your business to platforms that actively enable growth and make you fit for the future. Let’s work together to ensure your business is future-proof.
Telephony: From fixed lines to IP platforms
Modern VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) solutions support how businesses operate today, whether you’re a single user or a complex multi-site operation, new IP based voice services, like Firstcom Europe’s Universe, deliver:
- Consistently higher call quality
- Advanced features and analytics
- Centralised management and control
- Predictable costs through bundled calling
All will benefit your business, and the efficiency with which you service your customers.
Connectivity: Modern speeds for future proofed businesses
Legacy copper-based broadband is slow; you’re operating with a built‑in limitation. Full Fibre to the Premise (FTTP) and Ethernet offer much higher speeds, with dramatically improved reliability and consistency.
For cloud applications, voice, video, and future digital initiatives, fibre is now essential—not optional.
Alarm & Care lines: Upgrade without disruption
Legacy analogue alarm systems can be transitioned using network IP devices, allowing existing hardware to operate over IP without complex re-engineering. Installation is straightforward, and number porting is simple.
Lift Lines: Smarter connectivity
Traditional legacy PSTN lift lines can be replaced with mobile SIMs, reducing costs while improving monitoring, diagnostics, and reporting—critical for safety and compliance.
“The time is now…”
The final switch-off is 31st January 2027, but the financial impact begins much sooner. By October 2026, WLR rentals will have doubled. At the same time, migration demand will surge—bringing longer lead times and reduced flexibility.
Act now to avoid the backlog, protect your prices, and control your migration timelines.
Move now, and you avoid paying double for slow, legacy technology while positioning your business for a future of growth.
Act while you are in control
The clock is ticking.
